If I have my location correct, we're looking at Manoa Mountain, in the Honolulu Watershed Forest Preserve. Old pictures (pre-World War II) show wetlands where those buildings are, and I recall reading they lands were considered swamps. They were drained, filled in, and a canal was put in to handle the run off from the mountains surrounding Honolulu. There are photos of the canal later on in this gallery, album, whatever it's called.
