Domaine Chateau Gaillard : The Domaine Château Gaillard is a host to artisan's crafts, pottery, plants, spices, a playground for children, and more. Our interest was in its Museum of Coffee and Chocolate. The museum was upstairs and not kept up, but it was fascinating nonetheless - ancient coffee mills, 50s and 60s coffee makers, and posters. The posters were the most interesting. Because of the close quarters, I took photos with a 10mm lens, causing the curvature you may notice. The property is near Trois Ilets and is easily recognizable by the helicopter landing pad near the road.

La Mauny 2008 : La Mauny was not in operation when we visited this year, so we did not get to see the giant claw in operation, and there were many fewer barrels of sulphuric acid this year. Slave Memorial at Anse Cafard, Martinique 2008 : In 1830, a ship anchored in Anse Cafard during a storm at night. The anchor failed, and the ship was driven onto a reef, where it was broken up. It sank with a cargo of slaves chained on board. A few survived somehow, and the memorial is for the event. Slavery had been officially ended on Martinique at that time, so the cargo was salvaged by sending them to Guyane, where slavery was till allowed, to be sold. The memorial is remarkably moving, although I am sorry to say it is not being maintained. The story was on a plastic board which has been completely destroyed, and the concrete forms are badly weathered, with the rebar showing in several figures.

La Pagerie, Martinique 2008 : Marie Josephe Rose de Tascher de la Pagerie was the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte and the first Empress of France. She was born in Trois Ilets, Martinique, in 1763. Her family home was a sugar cane plantation, the ruins of which are pictured here. She married the Vicomte de Beauharnais, who was executed in the French revolution. She married Napoleon two years later. The family estate in Martinique was destroyed several times by hurricanes, and only the kitchen outbuilding remains today. (Kitchens were generally in buildings separate from the family residence because of frequent fires.) The estate has the stone foundations of the residence and the shell of one of the buildings used to press the cane and boil off the water, leaving sugar.
