The San Carlos Institute. The original building from 1871 was burned, the next building was destroyed by a hurricane, and this building was condemned in the 1970s because of its derelict condition. Happily it was restored and is now used as a museum, art gallery, theater, and school.
The San Carlos Institute is one of the lovely buildings on Duvall St. It was founded in 1871 by Cuban exiles, a repetitive story, I'm sad to say. It's story is told here: http://www.institutosancarlos.org
Jose Marti launched his campaign for Cuban independence from here in 1892.
